Sprouts is a shadow art installation made with recycled materials that was also completed together with the ECHOES project at Google Singapore. Crumpled recycled papers were carefully composed to project the shadow image of ‘Android’ using the leaves surrounding it. The use of crumpled papers as the primary medium signified the progress of having many failed attempts/ideas that may not reach fruition until one becomes successful. It takes a series of underdeveloped ideas before one reaches its full potential. Every single idea, including the ones that did not mature, are equally significant and part of the process.
Furthermore, we tapped into the environmentally conscious nature of Mural Lingo by using only recycled materials for this project and to directly address the pressing issues we are facing currently (i.e deforestation and the unnecessary use of paper).
The entire process of planning and preparations took a month, with the physical execution taking one week. In order to position the paper to form the shadow of the Android, we used trial and error, moving each ‘branches’ and ‘leaves’, bit by bit until the projection was perfectly lined up.
